Compass Group UK & Ireland are the Winners of the Roses Interior Design Awards

Compass Group UK & Ireland are the winners of the Roses Interior Design Awards for their Grasslands restaurant at Edinburgh Zoo.

Leading foodservice and support services provider, Compass Group UK & Ireland has won the Roses Interior Design Award. The award was presented for the new Grasslands restaurant at Edinburgh Zoo, created in conjunction with Scottish design agency 442 Design.

The awards celebrate innovation and excellence in design and are judged by experts across the design industry. Compass Group UK & Ireland held two of the three finalist places in the Interior Design category for the newly launched Edinburgh Zoo eateries, Grasslands and the Jungle Foodcourt.

Roy Westwood, Creative Manager for Sport, Leisure and Hospitality at Compass Group UK & Ireland, says, “We are honoured to be recognised for our industry-leading design. To have both Grasslands and the Jungle Food Court sought out for nominations is testament to our design innovation and a brilliant opportunity to showcase the creative work we’re doing. We’ve created a real flagship in Edinburgh and are so proud that it competes with some of the best eateries on the high street.”

Compass won a new 10 year contract with Edinburgh Zoo in April, and has since embarked on a programme to refurbish and rebrand the dining destinations, bringing food to the forefront of the visitor experience.

Grasslands restaurant takes inspiration from one of the main animal habitats represented at the zoo. On a base of neutral colours inspired by the sunsets and sun-bleached landscapes of the African grasslands, strong graphics of zebras, ants and an anteater link to the animals residing close by in the zoo, while three dimensional model insects sprinkled throughout the interior add a sense of character and animation to the design. An open kitchen has a modern Italian style, while grab-and-go areas allow customers to make quick and easy choices. The restaurant also features elements of front-of-house food theatre and front-of-house pizza making and baking, allowing customers to see chefs preparing dishes right before their eyes.
