Discover Héctor Serrano’s Design Strategy for Packaging
Design strategy is about organizing peoples' lives… It’s about understanding needs and make living easier. Your task is to understand your user so thoroughly that when you present the result, you surprise and fascinate by giving your user exactly what he/she wants. When Héctor Serrano designed the Papa de Tenerife Packaging, he devoted his efforts on focusing the entire design on the person's needs when making a traditional Spanish dish.
Designer Héctor Serrano created a package that holds the ingredients for a traditional potato dish served on the island Tenerife. The project, named Papa de Tenerife Packaging, was designed for the Tenerife City Council as an authentic souvenir, and it contains little raw potatoes, two spicy sauces made with oil and vinegar, and thick marine salt.
Design and and a product's functionality should be transformed into one thing, not separated. The outer case, of the Papa de Tenerife Packaging, is made out of lacquered aluminium and the holes inside the package are used to brand the pack as well as created for ventilation to maintain the Papa on a perfect condition.
Once used, the aluminum outside case can be re-used making a more sustainable product. A circular thermoplastic tray inside contains the potatoes and can be lifted out to reveal containers of seasoning and sauce below.
The project is part of TDFSigno and was launch at Tenerife Design Festival.
