The Futureplex Was Supposed to Represent the Design of Future Offices

The Futureplex's design was supposed represent the design of future offices, though the project was unfortunately suspended in the 2001 "dot com crash", the owner has since sold the site where it was supposed to be constructed. "It was an exciting project both for the attempt to create a truly urban alternative to the typical suburban office park and for the integrated, fast-track design process - construction started less than 6 months after the team were commissioned."

Designed to embody the principles of the office of the future, including sustainable construction and an environment that encourages collaboration, the 1.3 million square foot complex was to have been built at the southern edge of San Francisco, overlooking Candlestick Cove.

Each of the three interconnected buildings in the complex is designed around an atrium that provides an important social space at its base and allows daylight deep into the large floor plates. Smaller, loft-like buildings along the street frontage provide space for smaller companies and retail space in order to encourage an diversity of uses on the somewhat isolated site.

The building structure incorporates energy-absorbing dampers and special moment resisting trusses to ensure that the structure will be useable after a significant earthquake. The mechanical systems are based on an under-floor distribution system and use the atria as an exhaust system for excess heat.
